Q: What are the early signs of cancer?

Dr. Fitt: Better to know the signs that presage cancer. Unfortunately, by the time a patient was coughing up blood and the lung cancer was large enough for me to see on X-ray, it had already spread. We don’t do well with cancer that has spread–metastasized.

  • If you’re rolling the dice using tobacco products, expect cancer.
  • If you have first degree relatives that had cancer, expect cancer (My dad having prostate cancer made me hyper-vigilant about having my PSA tested).
  • If you’re overweight, especially if fat is concentrated around your gut, expect cancer.
  • If your hemoglobin A1c is consistently above 5.2 (elevated blood sugar), expect cancer.
  • If you have an autoimmune condition, expect cancer.
  • If you were treated for childhood cancer, expect cancer.
  • If your occupation exposes you to pesticides, expect cancer.
  • If your TSH is above 1.0, expect cancer.
  • If your MCV is above 85, expect cancer.
  • If you took birth control pills, expect cancer.
  • If your diet is high in cured meats and low in fresh produce, expect cancer.
  • If you don’t get pregnant before age 25, expect cancer.
  • If you don’t supplement with iodine, vitamin D3 and selenium, expect cancer.
  • If your mom was exposed to toxic chemicals while she was carrying you, expect cancer.

If you have any of these risk factors, take precautions by taking advantage of screening procedures, get regular exercise and increase your intake of dark produce.
